1. Freedom
2. A chance to learn more.
3. A chance to earn more in a given month.
4. Working for yourself as opposed to working for someone else.
5. More time available for those you love.

I also work from home full time - as a developer. This is 100% at home unless I travel far to the office. I used to be conflicted about it a bit until I spent the last quarter of last year in the office and I much prefer working at home.

About 7 years ago I worked at a local place from home. There were a few others who also worked at home. But we'd meet in the office 1 or 2 days a week - mainly for coffee, and lunch and a little work, and that was ideal. Just enough contact to get the water cooler chat out, but more then enough time at home to get quality uninterrupted time in.

@jasondarrow

Co-working facilities are slowly becoming popular alternatives for "at home" workers who want some degree of face-to-face with others. They're not going to be your "co-workers" directly, but there's a degree of human interaction you don't get being at home 24/7.

I really like working remotely. It gives me more time to work, more space to be productive, and the ability to work with people from around the world. As for the communication issues, there was an article in the Harvard Business Review called Can Absence Make a Team Grow Stronger?

The general conclusion was that it can. Not communicating face-to-face means you have to go out of your way to make communication work and stay connected with the rest of your team. It is a little extra effort, but it results in better working relationships.

I live in the Boston area as well and have been working from home for the past few years.

I'm conflicted about it. On the one hand I hate not having the face-to-face conversations. However, after doing it so long I think I would have some serious issues having to drive into an office everyday. I go to the gym everyday now. I wake up late. I save about $400 a month on gas, parking, and lunch. Not to mention the fact that I'm no longer stuck in traffic or driving for 2 hours or more a day.

With all that said though I miss the human face-toface interaction. There really is nothing that can replace that aspect of things. I wish there was some middle ground I could fine in that regards but I simply cannot at this point. Someone mentioned video. That might help but I have not tried it.

Don't laugh too hard but I've interviewed for a number of jobs where I would have to drive into an office. After thinking about it I came up with what I think is a fairly reasonable number to apply to working from home verses driving into an office. I'd say it is worth around $15K a year in real and time expenses. That number could vary greatly but on average that is what I think it is worth to me.

Big offices should be extinct. How many people are busy but not doing business. It is such crap...arrive late, take lunch and duck out when no one is looking. crappy way to live.

in the age of internet,fax, email and most importantly - VIDEO - there is no reason why you cant cooperate with employees via video chat. offices are for sheeple
